Hello All! Is This a Purebred Maltese?

Postby doggymama » Tue Feb 11, 2014 1:58 am

Hi everyone! I just signed up because I need help :( I've had dogs for most of my life, mostly rescues, and my last one died of old age. I'm thinking of getting a Maltese because, from what I researched, the breed seems to be a great fit for me, temperament-wise, and also because they're so cute :). I saw an ad where a person is selling his Maltese for undisclosed reasons. The owner claims the Maltese is pure-bred, but he doesn't have any papers.

In your opinion, is the puppy pure Maltese or a mix? Thank you.

That is one cute doggy, but the face does not look as if it is all Maltese. If he is a rescue and you love him, just go for it. But, if you are paying for a pure bred, I rather doubt he is one...but he is a sweet looking little fellow.

If it is a purebred, then it is not a very good example of the breed. The muzzle is much longer than the Maltese standard and I think the ears are too long. It is a cute little dog. But to me it has the look of a mix, possibly poodle due to the ears and muzzle length. But the fur is not curly! So without papers, it is really hard to say what it is!

If you want a puppy that will look like a good example of the Maltese standard when it is grown, then I think you should keep looking.

I would also be careful about health and vaccination status.

Also it looks rather large, but that may just be the way it is photographed. The Maltese standard calls for a maximum size of 7 pounds (but of course even with real purebreds, there can be a variation).

Looks far more like a Bichon Frise.. possibly mixed with Maltese.

While Abby was a pure bred Maltese, she was also a rescue.
I am all about rescuing dogs in need...
If your heart is open and this little fella grabs it.. go with it! :)
There are also breed specific rescue groups- you just have to look.
Good luck with whatever choice you make!
