Pancreatitis and Prescriptive Food

Postby Tanya » Fri Aug 28, 2015 2:41 pm

Hi all,
I know this topic has come up and after searching here and other internet places I am still lost. My 10 year old Maltese is back in the hospital with severe pancreatitis. She had an episode requiring same a year ago. She was started on prescriptive Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat dry kibble diet a year ago after her first bout (fat content is I think 6%). She has had slightly high cholesterol levels over the last 7 months but specialist is hesitant about putting her on anything for it due to the pancreatitis history. We have been very careful reading all labels for any treats and try to give sparingly, all at 5% fat or lower. She also has immune mediated thrombocytopenia for which she takes maintenance dose of Prednisone 5mg 1/2 every 3 days. That said, here we are again and she is very sick. I have read that Prednisone can possibly trigger episodes of pancreatitis, but food is a factor of course. If you are experiencing chronic pancreatitis what are you feeding your furbabies? Any suggestions to help decrease chances of recurrence as much as possible?
